And if by grace, then it is no longer by works; if it were,
grace would no longer be grace.
What does Paul mean in this passage when he says, "And if by grace, then it is no longer by works?" Was it ever by works? Well, actually - yes and no.
The Old Testament Law, as we see in the writings of Paul and others, was never meant to bring salvation, but to educate us as to GOD'S character and ours. It was (and is) better to try to obey the Law, than not obey, but obedience will never earn a place in heaven!
That is because it is all by Grace. Grace is not just a side road of salvation, it is the road! Without Grace, there is no salvation, no sanctification, no help in life, no providence and protection, no answered prayer . . . . Just name anything in Christianity that is good, and it is there because of Grace!
So let's make all the more effort to understand Grace, our foundation.
