Saturday Wrap #180

A Heartbeat Away

You treat the dark of night with such familiar contempt, knowing and taking for granted that the sun will rise again tomorrow.

Death is not such a distant place for it is only as far away as the next blink of an eye. Death is no stranger, for she is as familiar with you as the stillness between two heart beats. Tick will not always follow tock for you. Death, she commands your presence but what greets you over that final threshold will depend totally on what you have put off until tomorrow.

The existence of heaven is as certain as the coming of death and when it is your time to enter that place you will be greeted by the angels and the Saints and the generations of your family who have gone there before you. There will be celebrations and praise and great rejoicing; there will be love and warmth and a oneness with the Lord that you can not yet imagine; And you will look upon the Lord and you will see His face and He will embrace you and take you to Himself and talk with you and you will cry tears of love and joy; And you will join in the great exaltation and praise Him; And the Lord will offer you up to the Father and beseech Him, "Father, accept this soul as your child....".    But wait !

Putting off until tomorrow that which should be done today has become an almost daily routine with you. Yes, the sun will rise tomorrow but you, my friend, may never see it. Though you may not sense it or acknowledge it, death really is that near.

If you have not accepted the Lord Jesus into your life as your Savoir; if you have not yet confirmed your place in heaven, then do it now.  Now ! If you miss a train, there will always be another. If you miss your airport connection there will be a later flight, but if you miss this moment, this opportunity, this blessed time, then the next blink of your eye or the next beat of your heart may well mark the end of what could be your last chance, and then you must consider, "What lies beyond the threshold of death for me?"

Is that a certain smugness that I sense? What's that you say? You have already accepted the Lord as your own? Then I praise the Lord and heaven celebrates in you, but do not treat death with the same familiar contempt as you do the dark of night. Reaffirm and reaffirm and reaffirm again, for Jesus is not some 'get out of jail free' card that you keep safely tucked away with your insurance policies....He is your active and on-going relationship with God.
