 - ABOUT
PRAYER -

"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men.  I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.  But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your FATHER, who is unseen.  Then your FATHER, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.  And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.  Do not be like them, for your FATHER knows what you need before you ask HIM."

Matthew 6:5-8

 ------------

In Matthew 6:5-8, JESUS wants HIS disciples to understand the basics of prayer The Follower of JESUS does not pray to the FATHER in such a way as to impress other people in order to be respected or honored, but to ask for blessings and help for others as well as themselves.

Also, long-winded prayers to impress GOD are not required or wanted!  The length of a prayer is not as important as content.  Many miracles have been performed by the words; "JESUS, help me!"

It is not always easy to remember that your HEAVENLY FATHER knows what you need before you ask HIM.  Once that truth sinks in and you pray accordingly, you will have more time to do other important things besides praying.

If the LORD were like me, AND HE'S NOT, praise JESUS, HE might get bored listening to some of my prayers, and maybe a few of yours as well.  It is a good thing that no matter how religiously boring a person might become in a long on-going prayer, the FATHER never stops listening to the heart of the one praying.

 - HOW TO PRAY
-

"This, then, is how you should pray:
   " 'Our FATHER in heaven,
   hallowed be YOUR Name,
 YOUR kingdom come,
   YOUR will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.'
For if you forgive men when they sin against you,
your HEAVENLY FATHER will also forgive you.
But if you do not forgive men their sins,
your FATHER will not forgive your sins."

Matthew 6:9-15

 ------------

In Matthew 6:9-15, JESUS lays a foundation for HIS disciples on How To Pray, not What To PrayJESUS' words here are very beautiful and powerful.

This one prayer

  • Teaches us the way to bring praise and glory to the FATHER

  • Teaches us of our need of GOD'S blessings and provisions in our life.

  • Teaches us to seek the LORD for the forgiveness of our personal sins.

  • Teaches us how to avoid rushing into sin.

  • Teaches us the critical importance of forgiving those who sin against us in order to be forgiven by the FATHER in our own life.

While it is not wrong to pray this prayer, JESUS never intended HIS people to repeat these words over and over again in an attempt to be holy or obedient.  Remember -

"And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words."

It's not possible that JESUS forgot what HE had just taught seconds before and therefore contradicted HIMSELF.  Use this prayer of JESUS on:  How To Pray as a perfect model, not the only model to follow in prayer.

Here is one possible prayer from the model JESUS provided us with -

My CREATOR and the lover of my soul,
no one can be equal or greater then YOU my GOD,
May my life calling be a blessing to YOU and,
help bring about YOUR perfect will to YOUR world.
I call to YOU as my PROVIDER of all my needs.
LORD, please forgive all my sins, and help me to
forgive everyone who sins against me.
Please keep my feet on YOUR Path and help me
avoid the desires of my flesh and satan's call to me.

Before you judge this prayer example too harshly, don't overlook the truth that since JESUS was only providing a model in what the Church loves to call - The LORD'S Prayer, everyone is free to adapt HIS Words to their own particular culture without altering the interpretation of HIS Word.  In other words, our FATHER in Heaven is always to be recognized as CREATOR, GOD ALMIGHTY, LORD of all, etc.  GOD'S identity and gender are not open for alternate interpretations.

When Believers get to heaven they may be surprised at the sign on the wall that reads:
