Ephesians 6:12
(Amplified Bible)

For we are not wrestling with flesh and blood [contending only with physical opponents], but against the despotisms, against the powers, against [the master spirits who are] the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spirit forces of wickedness in the heavenly (supernatural) sphere.

Fighting against a "seen" enemy is one thing.  But doing battle with the unseen is completely different kind of fight.  Before we get to far in to the battle, I want to acquaint you with your enemy.

Long ago, Lucifer, a chief angel and thousands (maybe millions) of angels were cast out of heaven due to their rebellion.

They are now in the earthly realm, unseen and up to no good.  Lucifer's new name is Satan.  We call the fallen angels demons.  Paul refers to a hierarchy of ruling spirits of this present darkness.  He names them as principalities, powers, wicked spirits and rulers in high places.

It is like a whole kingdom of wickedness set up in the lower heavenly (read spiritual) realm with the sole purpose of disrupting the restorative work of JESUS.

Good news - they lose!  JESUS wins and has already won.  HIS victory is now propagating into this world.  So far, it has been taking over for a bit over 2,000 years.  One day HE will return as the Reigning KING of KINGS and deliver the final blow to the wicked beings in the spiritual realm.

Until that day, HE has not left us powerless!  HE has given us HIS Word and HIS Armor so that we would be safe.  But a word of caution is due . . .   Armor not put on is no armor at all.
